David Frederick Riley is a renowned painter specializing in Wildlife, Western themes, and Portraiture. His paintings blend traditional subjects with contemporary presentation, combining realism and abstract elements to create captivating imagery. Collected nationally and internationally, Riley's artwork is featured in leading galleries throughout the Western and Southwestern United States and as far abroad as New Zealand. He regularly showcases his work through six to nine solo exhibitions each year, contributing to his recognition as a leading figure in Wildlife and Western art. Working primarily with oils on canvas, Riley's creative process begins by establishing large shapes, general values, and color composition. At this stage, he emphasizes broad brush strokes and dynamic mark-making, intentionally keeping edges soft and fluid. He then uses mineral spirits to distress the paint, adding drips and splatters that enhance texture and visual interest. Once dry, Riley revisits each piece to refine details, sharpen edges, and deepen contrasts. The resulting paintings balance abstraction with precise details, culminating in an ethereal, dream-like quality. Riley currently lives and creates in Midway, Utah, alongside his wife and fellow artist, Nealy May Riley, and their two children.
