César López Negrete The work of César López Negrete has its origins in the tensions that join together art, architecture, restoration, and territory. With a special interest in the modes of action and interaction of subjects and their environments, César takes up the landscape as piece and board for projection, construction, and the questioning of artistic practices and their various possibilities, drawing on spatial, historical, and sensorial research. Through the careful observation of certain places and the elements comprising them, the artist makes an edit, pointing out those that evoke sensitive states, all with the aim of sharing that experience, and, in this way, extending their possible readings and sensational drifts. Son of a prominent art restorer, César maintains a principle of rescuing voices, stories, and images from other times, one that is permanently manifested in the desire to capture, through different techniques, impressions of a testimony of lives and events that we inhabit. It should be noted that his pieces are created with this awareness of the restorer: beginning with the works’ construction, that is, there is a selection of durable, resistant materials. César López Negrete records sensations and trajectories of his body in the landscape without neglecting the formal and plastic importance of those resolutions that start out as contemplative practices but that, through César’s technical use of his expertise in the fields of art and architecture, are broadened in their range of legibility and raison d’être. His works are part of such institutions and private collections as the Mazal Collection, Coppel, Solaz, and the Grand Hyatt. A Ford Foundation Fellow for studies in ecological design at Schumacher College in the United Kingdom and a graduate of London’s Architectural Association School, César boasts extensive technical expertise and diverse practices that have brought him to new ways of experiencing architecture. It is worth highlighting his participation in architecture and landscape design practices with Shin Egashira in Koshirakura, Japan. He has been a professor of experimental design and construction at the University of California, Berkeley, and an invited critic at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. He is also the co-founder of CAIS, an eco-technology and permaculture center located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. César López Negrete (1973) currently produces his work in conjunction with Día Galería, while also directing and managing Seminario 12, a cultural space dedicated to memory, archives, and the visual arts in Mexico City.
