Suzie Greer Baker brings a fresh, expressive energy to everything she paints—whether capturing a luminous landscape en plein air, composing a vibrant still life in the studio, or working on a thoughtful portrait commission. Known for her representational yet painterly style, Suzie paints with a confident alla prima approach that emphasizes spontaneity, atmosphere, and a love for the process itself. Her brushwork is loose, intentional, and always evolving, shaped by years of experimentation and deep curiosity. Suzie’s passion for direct painting began during her college years at Louisiana Tech University, where a formative assignment under professor Peter Jones sparked her enduring love for immediacy in art. Tasked with completing two floral still lifes in just 30 minutes each, she discovered the joy of expressive, intuitive mark-making—an artistic breakthrough she continues to chase today. Art has always been central in Suzie’s life. She fondly remembers her early artistic experiments (including gluing brown crayon shavings to a childhood drawing of an owl) and credits mentors like her high school teacher Ken Tracy and several influential college professors for nurturing her creativity. Though she earned a BA in Advertising and Fine Arts and spent years working as an art director, Suzie transitioned to full-time painting in 2008 when a move overseas gave her space to focus on what mattered most—family and fine art. Since then, Suzie has earned national recognition for her versatility, with award-winning work spanning plein air, figurative, still life, and portrait painting. Her art has been featured in Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art and Architecture, and Southwest Art, among others. A passionate and encouraging teacher, she leads workshops both in the U.S. and internationally, and shares her knowledge through instructional videos. In addition to her studio and plein air work, Suzie is deeply invested in the artist community. She has served on the board of Oil Painters of America since 2014, including a term as President from 2020–2022. “Being on the path of a working artist is a calling,” she says. “Helping others navigate that path is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.” Suzie now lives in Shenandoah, Texas, but her love of travel and connecting with people makes her especially suited for the life of a plein air painter. Through it all, her motivation remains clear: to continually grow as an artist, to respond authentically to the world around her, and to leave a legacy of meaningful, expressive paintings. “I hope I’ll be painting until I’m an old woman,” Suzie says with a smile. “There’s always more to learn, more to see, and more to say.”
