Tomory Dodge (USA,1974) Tomory Dodge is a contemporary American painter best known for his gestural abstractions. He melds American history, landscape painting, post-Internet aesthetics, and urban life with explosive brushstrokes, reminiscent of Jules de Balincourt’s work. “I like the formal tension that comes from the inclusion of different approaches to painting on one surface,” the artist’s said of painting. “But I think a lot of that tension comes from my own doubt in the adequacy of any single approach or system of painting. There is often a simultaneous doubt and fascinationby the last mark or action I’ve made.” Born on December 23, 1974 in Denver, CO, he received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998, followed by an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2004. Dodge's career has been dotted with achievements, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant in 2004. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. His works are included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
