Xavi Ceerre (Alcoy, 1988) develops a highly physical, intuitive, and process-based painting practice, where gesture, error, and material become fundamental elements in constructing a personal visual language in constant transformation. His work sits at the intersection of the impulsive and the structured, the urban and the intimate, the material and the symbolic, channeling influences ranging from children’s art to graffiti, electronic music, abstract expressionism, and synesthesia. He graduated in Graphic Design from the Llotja School in Barcelona (2014) and holds a Master’s in Painting from UPV/EHU (Bilbao, 2020). He has complemented his training in international contexts such as the School of Visual Arts in New York (Advanced Painting, 2017) and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (2019).Throughout his career, he has developed a solid body of work that combines painting, installation, sculpture, and abstract muralism. In recent years, he has held solo exhibitions in some of Spain’s leading galleries: Galería Carles Taché in Barcelona —with Todo es de color (2023) and Houses are human (2022)—, Galería Herrero de Tejada in Madrid (New Singer Old Song, 2023), Groc Projects in Barcelona (Pon el Ceerre al lado de un Miquel, 2022), Galería Arniches 26 (Speed Racer, 2022), and IVAM Cada Alcoi (Alambrada, 2022). His work has also been shown in institutions and independent spaces in Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin, London, Paris, Denver, and Miami, fostering an ongoing international dialogue around his visual language. He has participated in fairs such as Art-o-rama (Marseille), Estampa, and UVNT, and has received several distinctions, including the Art Nou 2023 Best Exhibition Award. He has taken part in residencies at key centers such as BilbaoArte, ZAWP, Piramidón, Fabra i Coats, La Escocesa, and Nautilus Lanzarote, consolidating a nomadic practice deeply engaged with collective creation contexts. His work is part of public and private collections including the City Council of Alcoy, Fundación BilbaoArte, Piramidón Centre d’Art Contemporani, and Nautilus Lanzarote, as well as the collections of Xavier Martí i Ferrer, Fernando Aleu (President of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, New York), and Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art Collection (New York), among others. In his pictorial universe, the spontaneity of gesture coexists with references to music, urban landscapes, comics, and visual residues of childhood. Ceerre conceives painting as a field of friction, where matter reveals layers of memory, error, and resistance — a practice that, rather than seeking clarity or traditional representation, embraces vibration, enigma, and the sensorial as a form of knowledge.
