Ellen Cowie is driven by a deep passion for exploring a diverse range of motifs, infusing each piece with a deliberate sense of freedom that reflects her optimism and connection to the world. Over time, her oil paintings have developed into a distinct and recognizable style that speaks to her experiences and perspective. Having lived in isolated areas across Canada, Ellen's work is shaped by the quiet beauty and the unique landscapes I’ve encountered. Her vibrant oil representations of everyday life not only capture the essence of the moment but also often lead to treasured commissioned pieces. Ellen begins each painting by freehand sketching directly onto the canvas, allowing the composition to unfold naturally in the paint itself. As she builds up layers, she carefully maintains the freshness, light, and energy of her initial brushstrokes, creating a dynamic sense of movement within the work. This process allows the painting to evolve while keeping the spirit of the first impression intact, resulting in pieces that feel both spontaneous and intentional. Through Ellen's work, she aims to share the optimism she feels about life, inviting the viewer to experience the world through her eyes. Since 1991, Ellen's works have been carried by fine art galleries, allowing her to share her creations with a wider audience. A highlight of her career came with the great honour of having two of her $200 coin designs produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013 and 2015.
