Debra Joy Groesser is a landscape and portrait painter whose work bridges observation, intuition, and emotional connection. Her practice centers on painting from life, especially outdoors, to create a sense of place and invite viewers into the feeling of the moment.Debra Joy Groesser has been making art since early childhood. Born in 1957, she had her first public recognition at age three when a drawing she made was featured on television. She began painting with acrylics at twelve and received her first set of oils at fourteen. After earning her BFA in painting in 1978, she worked in design and real estate while continuing to paint and build her skills. In the 1990s, with support from her husband Don, she returned to art full time, teaching classes and expanding her practice into a downtown Ralston studio and gallery. Her career gained momentum through juried exhibitions and plein air competitions, leading to her eventual leadership role with the American Impressionist Society. She describes her style as Impressionistic Realism. Her plein air paintings are immediate and intuitive, while her studio work often leans more detailed. She works with a double primary limited palette, typically on double oil-primed linen panels. Outdoor studies and color sketches often serve as the foundation for larger studio paintings. She brings the same observational discipline and painterly approach to both landscapes and portraits.
