With a background that spans leather craftsmanship and the restoration of historic buildings, his artistic journey is rooted in a deep love of storytelling and a passion for bringing imagination to life.As a contemporary Western artist, Launder focuses on creating visual biographies of the American West and its iconic figures. Raised without a television, he spent his formative years immersed in a well-stocked art room and a rich collection of biographies—stories of Buffalo Bill, Amelia Earhart, John Dillinger, and Sitting Bull sparked his early curiosity and continue to shape his artistic vision. Today, pages from those very books are often incorporated into his work as layered collage elements that form part of each piece’s textured foundation. Launder’s process centers around what he calls “the draw”—an immediate visual hook that pulls the viewer in. From there, his pieces gradually reveal themselves: a vintage newspaper clipping, a clever use of mixed media, or a hidden historical reference waiting to be discovered. His goal is to create artwork that feels both grounded and dynamic, offering new discoveries the longer you engage with it. While he frequently experiments with other materials and disciplines to channel his creative energy, the core of Launder’s practice remains consistent: to tell stories visually, to honour the past, and to keep the legends of the West alive through richly layered, ever-evolving works.
