Called ”The esthetic conscience of his generation,” Louis Finkelstein was renowned not only for his paintings but as a vital force and influential teacher at Yale, the Philadelphia College of Art, the New York Studio School, and Queens College (CUNU) where he was the head of the Art Department for twenty-five years. He was also a visiting critic/artist at other institutions and a prolific speaker and writer on art. Solo exhibitions included the Graham, Pyramid and Ingbar galleries and Dartmouth, Haverford, Know, William and Mary colleges and Yale University. Group exhibitions included Cooper Union, the Whitney, Smithsonian and Cochran museums and the National Academy of Design, where he was a member.
