Eric Aho is a painter known for his gestural landscapes, featuring the intersection of humanity and nature—houses, barns, and tended fields—without including human subjects. Aho’s compositions, which can be considered both representational and abstract, are based on places that hold the most significance for Aho, such as the area around his home in Vermont, New England, and Finland. These depictions, however, are not completed en plein air, but constructed from memory, making occasional references to iconic historical works by Willem de Kooning and Francisco Goya. Aho’s works deal with themes of weather, the abstracted qualities of light and shadow across seasons, and the presence of man in the vastness of nature.
