Samuel Dunson is a multidisciplinary artist based in Nashville, Tennessee, whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and video. Raised in a creative household in Dayton, Ohio, his journey into Fine Art began unexpectedly with a chance meeting with an art professor at Tennessee State University. That moment led to his first drawing course and ultimately shaped his lifelong commitment to art. Samuel earned his B.S. in Studio Art from Tennessee State University in 1992 and later received a Presidential Fellowship to pursue an M.F.A. in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He returned to TSU as a professor, balancing an active teaching role with a prolific studio practice. Over the past two decades, Samuel’s work has explored personal transformation and the emotional complexities of life’s transitions. His recent works—soft sculptural paintings that blend fabric and paint—push the boundaries of traditional formats, freeing his narratives from the flat plane and embracing a more immersive, tactile language.
