David Shrigley is a British visual artist, illustrator, and writer best known for his darkly humorous drawings, hand-written texts, sculptures, animations, and prints. Born in 1968 in Macclesfield, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and has become one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary British art.Shrigley’s work is characterized by deliberately simple draftsmanship, deadpan humor, and a keen observation of the absurdities of everyday life. Combining childlike imagery with witty, often existential text, his works address themes such as anxiety, social conventions, mortality, self-doubt, and human behavior. His unique visual language blurs the boundaries between fine art, cartoons, and popular culture.Although initially known for his drawings and artist books, Shrigley has worked across a wide range of media, including sculpture, large-scale public art, animation, music collaborations, and printmaking. One of his best-known public projects is Really Good, a monumental bronze thumbs-up installed on London's Trafalgar Square as part of the Fourth Plinth program.Shrigley has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Hayward Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland, and the Museum Ludwig. His work is widely collected and admired for its ability to combine humor and melancholy while offering insightful commentary on the contradictions of contemporary life.
