Kate Kern Mundie (b. 1974 St. Louis, MO raised in Boston, MA) is a mid-career painter working in American realism. Her work explores the relationship between human development and the environment. She paints both urban scenes and natural landscapes and considers her work part of the environmental realism movement. Kate’s work is in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and various private collections. She has received the Fred & Naomi Hazell Faculty Fellowship twice, and her work has appeared on book and film covers. She studied at PAFA, Montserrat College of Art, and the University of Pennsylvania (BFA). She lives in Philadelphia with her husband, artist James Mundie, and their children, and spends time painting on Deer Isle, Maine, where she owns a home. I am a landscape painter working in oil and aqueous media. I paint mostly en plein air, often completing each painting in one session on location. I spend part of the year on Deer Isle, where the landscape of Penobscot Bay—rocky shores, sandy pocket beaches, and quiet coves—offers endless inspiration. The shifting light, fog, and tide constantly change the scene. I’ve painted as the water rose around my boots, listened to geese call across the cove, and once stayed so still that I watched a family of mink swim up from an island to where I stood painting. These direct, immersive experiences are at the heart of my work. My paintings reflect time spent observing and being present in the landscape, and my deep connection to place.
