Born on Sunday, August 1, 1965, in the vibrant and colourful St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Michael Sutton’s creative journey began in the glow of Caribbean sunlight and the rhythm of island life. Even at the age of three, Michael was drawn to art—fascinated by light, shadow, and the lens of a camera. His early years were steeped in natural beauty and cultural richness, which would later form the foundation of his artistic expression. At nine, Michael moved with his mother and brothers to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she sought greater opportunities and educational advancement for the family. There, his passion for photography and visual storytelling continued to grow. After graduating from Washington High School in 1985, he briefly attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD), further honing his artistic skills. In 1998, Michael relocated to Arizona, where his career took a professional leap. Partnering with Elite Modelling Agency and other major agencies like Ford Modelling, Jenner’s Talent, and Aria, he worked as a freelance photographer, producing thousands of images for emerging models, performers, and corporate campaigns. He also developed viral marketing concepts and private showings that allowed him to travel extensively across the U.S. and occasionally return home to the islands, which continue to inspire his work. Michael’s photography has been featured in multiple exhibitions, including a solo show in New York in 2008, highlighting his body/form art. His work earned the cover of Blue Magazine's 75th anniversary issue, recognizing him as one of the world’s top photographers. Milwaukee has also hosted several of his shows, including The Timeless Carnival Series at Café Vecchio Mondo (1998), Black & White Photography at The Velvet Room (2001), and a continuation of that study at Art Bar in Bay View (2011). A significant influence on his journey were mentors like Pat Deckert and Ron Routt, as well as photographer John Beckett, who began guiding Michael when he was just 15. John’s encouragement helped shape his artistry, and they remain friends today. Michael’s signature Carnival Series is a deeply personal, vibrant celebration of his heritage. Created with bold acrylics, these expressive portraits evoke the colour, rhythm, and joy of Caribbean culture, bringing warmth and identity to his surroundings, especially during long Midwestern winters. The green in his palette honors nature and family resourcefulness; blue reflects both the serenity and depth of the sea, while yellows and reds represent the island’s flora, fruit, and the laughter that infuses island life. Each piece is named after a place or people linked to his ancestral migration from Africa to the Caribbean, creating a living bridge between history, culture, and personal identity. “My work reflects my life—my dreams, my culture, and my love for humanity,” says Michael. “Art allows me to stay connected to my roots and share that joy with others.”
