Steve Whitehead is one of the leading British Realist painters of his generation. A painter primarily of landscape and cityscape, he also enjoys still-life and figurative subjects. His work draws on diverse traditions, from American Photorealism to German Romanticism and English Surrealism. Each painting is created from photographs, sketches and colour notes collected on location, re-interpreted on canvas back at the studio. He often works on two or three paintings together, and it might take a year for a painting to be completed. Steve was born in Warwickshire, but has lived, taught and painted in North Yorkshire for thirty years. He is married to the artist Paula Zimmermann and they work, mostly contentedly, in adjoining studios. He studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth under the tutelage of artist David Tinker, graduating with an MA in Visual Art in 1984. He has exhibited widely with galleries, and in group shows and competitions, twice winning the Wales Open and an award winner for the Manchester Academy, Ferens Open and Hunting Art Prizes exhibitions. Along with painting, Steve also spends time as an art and collectables restorer, an allotment gardener, and saxophonist.
