I have always been drawn to pottery. It satisfies both my visual and tactile senses. Being a functional potter allows me to include these elements in objects that are part of our everyday lives and daily rituals. When making pieces, I consider the form and how it is intended to be used. Slowing down and being thoughtful about how we live with objects is a constant consideration to my work.I am also drawn to textures and layers of color we find in nature for my decorative elements. For me no other medium can capture this like ceramics. Since clay is part of the earth, shaped with water, dried by the air and cured with fire, it is truly an elemental art form. Working with high-fire stoneware in atmospheric kilns, I incorporate different layers of texture to my pieces to attract the flame. Adding minimal glazes and slips enhances the glaze that is formed by the ash or soda within the atmospheric kiln. Artist StatementSince 2011, I’ve been immersed in the art of functional pottery, drawing inspiration primarily from the textures and colors found in nature. Working with high-fire clay, I aim to capture the kiln’s atmospheric effects using layers of glazes, slips, washes and textures.Cats have also been influential to my work as they have been a constant presence throughout my life. Their ever-presence can be seen in some of my work as I include their whimsical nature into those pieces.My pottery brings me joy because it allows me to be immersed in the environment I love and translate it into objects that are part of everyday life and daily rituals. Through my art, I invite others to share in these inspirations and connect with the world around us.
