Joe Sanders was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and grew up spending much of his life in coastal environs in the US and abroad. His work explores intersections of art, natural history and the environment. Joe’s creative research include printmaking, artist’s books, and hand papermaking. Sanders has been active in residencies such as the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy. His work has been included in over 200 exhibitions and may be found in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and the Kennedy Museum of American Art, among other locations. Recent exhibitions include “Animals in Art” at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Baton Rouge, LA; “Paper Alive!” Paper Art International at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD), Germany; "L'arte della pesca...la pesca nell'arte 2023” in Castel di Sangro (AQ), Italy; and “Authentic Marks,” 4th Annual International Miniature Printmaking Exhibition at Zayed University in Dubai, UAE. Sanders holds art degrees from Florida State University and Arizona State University. He has been a professor and administrator at the University of Georgia, Florida State University, and Columbus State Univeristy where he currently works. Sanders was president of the printmaking organization Southern Graphics Council (SGC International) and currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio. He maintains studios in both Columbus and on Dog Island, a remote gulf coast barrier island.
