Sarah Mitchell| Needle Felting ArtistSarah Mitchell is a fiber artist who strives to bring the beauty and diversity of the naturalworld to her art through a process called needle felting. Needle felting is done by taking asmall, barbed needle and poking it repeatedly into wool to slowly form and build up asculpture. Working with fiber allows her to create a very realistic finish, which bringsthese animals to life. Each sculpture is started by creating a wire frame, which gives her sculptures support andallows them to be posed in diverse ways. Fiber is unique in that it allows the wireunderneath to move even when the sculpture is complete. She continues to blend, layer, and form the fibers layer upon layer until they build up to the finished sculpture. Her work is strongly influenced by the natural world. She often watches how animals sitand move so she can incorporate that feeling and movement into her sculptures. Thisattention to details allows her finished pieces to convey that sense of life and look likethey could take off from their wood mounts at any time. Her goal is to not only capturetheir images, but their mannerisms as well. It is this feeling of movement that makes hersculptures feel so lifelike. Her work is currently available at Art in the Square in Summerville, SC, the Charlestonfine Craft Gallery in Charleston, SC, and on her website WoolyWildlife.com.
