Based in Rhode Island, Alice Gebhart is a kiln-formed glass artist and teacher. "I work at translating and elevating the average, day-to-day experience into an enthusiastic and energetic celebration. I am captivated when finding appealing combinations of elements in the everyday scene and use these memories in my creations. I enjoy the technique of using glass to create something that is both abstract and literal. As an artist, my goal is to visually communicate using kiln-fired glass. The fluid nature of melting glass adds an energy and organic feeling to the image. It seems as if, after I cut the glass, layer it, then put it in the kiln, the glass is born. I open the kiln to a new creation which comes from my mind's eye and the psyche of the glass and kiln. Choosing the colors that enhance the mood of the image is an intuitive ritual. I cut and layer the brilliant colored opaque and transparent glass in a collage-type arrangement to simply and unceremoniously depict my plan. The pile of glass pieces is then placed in the kiln for firing and I experience a release and abandonment of control over the outcome. I open the kiln the next day to a new and exciting birth of an art form. The idea from which I started and the direction the glass chooses, leads to an expression and idea that becomes my narrative."
