"Synchronized Burn" explores fire as both force and metaphor; a wild, creative catalyst capable of consuming, cleansing, and igniting transformation. This body of work asks what becomes possible when destruction is intentional; when we gather not in fear of fire, but in communion with it. Before colonization, fire was used strategically by Indigenous land stewards to support thriving ecosystems. These cultural burning practices, still used today, demonstrate fire's role not only in destruction, but in regeneration, care, and long-term ecological health. This show honors that knowledge, re-framing fire as a sacred, communal act of balance. If we take that concept and apply it metaphorically to the political and economic landscape of 2025, the question becomes: What do we want to see burn? And what do we hope grows in its place? How can we synchronize our actions like a flock of murmuring birds? At its core, Synchronized Burn is about dismantling what no longer serves, not alone, but together. Fire becomes a shared ritual; a way to clear space for imagination, emergence, and new ways of living and relating. The exhibition includes a series of mono-prints made using letterpress printing techniques, inspired by the poem "Voting as Fire Extinguisher" by Kyle Tran Myhre. These works explore the tension between urgency and agency, questioning how we respond to crisis and where we place our hope. The centerpiece of the show is "Murmuring," a collaborative piece originally created through the Library Takeover program at Madison Public Library. Facilitated by Maria Schirmer and her team at Lakeview Library, this project invited community members to engage with prompts designed to encourage positive self-reflection and community building. Inspired by the writings of Adrienne Maree Brown and the movement of starling murmurations, Murmuring explores how new patterns, and new worlds, can emerge when we pay deep attention to one another. Throughout the exhibition, words and images work together to evoke our wildest callings. Just as fire needs air, my work uses language to spark and sustain viewers' imaginations. What might we become if we dared to burn together? This is a call to gather around the flames.
