Dale Mathis – Where Mechanics Meet ImaginationDale Mathis creates art that moves—literally and emotionally. A fusion of raw mechanics, industrial grit, and surreal fantasy, his high-relief, mixed-media sculptures defy categorization. Think H.G. Wells and Jules Verne reimagined by a streetwise poet with the hands of a master watchmaker. Standing 6’3” and weighing in at 300 lbs, Mathis is as physically commanding as the art he makes. His signature works are mechanical marvels—gears turn, lights glow, metal pulses with energy. Many pieces stretch over five feet wide, weighing 80 pounds or more. It’s art that doesn’t just hang on a wall—it claims the space. Born Dale Charles Mathis in 1972 in Inglewood, California, he grew up surrounded by gang violence and hardship. But from an early age, he found refuge in art and invention. Inspired by the escapist imagination of Salvador Dali and the trailblazing legacy of Edmonia Lewis, Dale was the kid who wanted to be MacGyver—disassembling the world around him not to fix it, but to reinvent it.Entirely self-taught, Dale's journey was anything but conventional. At 19, he relocated to Las Vegas, where he worked construction by day and bounced at nightclubs after dark—all while raising a young daughter and building a reputation as a visionary artist with a voice uniquely his own. In pursuit of peace and focus, Dale now spends part of the year creating from his studio in the Philippines, where the vibrant culture and natural beauty have become a second home—and a creative sanctuary. His work has been featured on MTV’s Cribs, The Real World: Las Vegas, and HGTV’s Crafters Coast to Coast. Media coverage includes Playboy Magazine, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and international watch and design publications in Europe and Latin America. Today, Dale Mathis is represented by galleries across the United States, and his one-of-a-kind creations continue to blur the line between machinery and myth.
