David Waterman Schock is an American portrait and landscape artist born in Boston, MA in 1962. He holds an MFA degree awarded by the University of Massachusetts, and studied at the Exeter College of Art in England and the Arts Students League of New York. Now living in Wakefield, RI, he specializes in a style bridging Realism and Impressionism, with subject matter ranging from coastal land and seascapes, to figurative works, still-life, and portraiture by commission. Inspired by Wyeth, Sargent, Hopper, Homer, Sorolla, Monet, and Degas, David’s landscape work captures the specifically nuanced and atmospheric scenes of New England, Europe, and the American West. They are suffused with a celebration of humankind’s successful relationship with nature, seen in a lush garden, ancient village, serene farmland, or an evening sunset at the shore. For David, the figure also plays a central role in his artistic practice, and he is well known for his figurative paintings, often of women and children at the beach in his native New England. Used as a symbol of interaction and perception, as well as a complete entity unto itself, the figural compositions present the viewer with a contemplation of the body’s relation to nature at large. David’s award-winning family portraits offer a beautiful and singular example of art celebrating not only family members, but the time and places they love to share. These works have been specially recognized by Rhode Island magazine, which awarded him “Best in Rhode Island” for his family portrait work. David’s work is collected worldwide, and has been represented at galleries in Newport, RI; Santa Fe, NM; and Carmel, CA. His figurative paintings are in the collection of the Mellon Family, whose private collection marked the creation of the National Gallery in Washington, DC. The Boston Copley Society awarded him distinction in painting, and he was chosen as the lead artist for the annual Boston Pops by the Sea Commemorative concert. His sports art was exhibited at Super Bowl 50, and his paintings have appeared in House Beautiful, on book covers, in network television shows, and published widely by the New York Graphic Society.
