Catherine McKinnon is a contemporary landscape painter based in Pawtucket, RI. She earned her MAE in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, her BA in Art and Education at the University of Rhode Island, and pursues continuing education at Providence College and Brown University. She has exhibited extensively in state-wide juried exhibitions, in two-person exhibitions as a member of the Providence Art Club, and received the Antonio Cipriano award in 2011. Catherine’s practice is heavily influenced by earlier travels to Western Europe, where she became inspired by its galleries, architecture, and storied vistas. She brought this vision to her career as an art teacher in the Pawtucket School Department, and continues to call upon these memories as the basis of her subject matter for her current studio work. Catherine seeks to render a spiritual experience rooted in landscape, and the fleeting beauty of light and color as the time of day and seasons change. Her delicate impressions of marsh grasses, water, trees, and sky capture the subtle gradations of hue along with dramatic variations in scale. Working in series, she aims to explore the ideas, mood, and sense of place particular to the New England landscape, while offering the viewer a sensory experience at once specific and universal.
