"Distinctive layering in my paintings has become key in process and concept. The first layer, and often the most explorative, incorporates a variety of mixed media, including transfers, spray paint, screen prints, and drawing media. Over these images, I pour toned or clear resin, producing a translucent effect. The underlying imagery is often taken from or relates to the subject of the work. The images and textures from this initial layer expand the visual dialogue while remaining literally separated by the resin, suggesting the past or history. Once the resin has hardened, the subjects, be they figures or objects, are developed with oil paint, at times realistically and at other times just emerging from their background. The content of the paintings is inevitably a response to contemporary issues. As I develop the variety of imagery and layers, I often think of the works as storyboards for a narrative not yet chronicled."
