Rob Carpenter plays with line to create calculated, eye-pleasing hand drawn "tapestries" as viewers often refer to them. Deliberately and repetitiously, Carpenter draws each line, then layers those lines until they fuse together to become one surface. Upon the completion of each time consuming layer, he steps back and recalculates his next stratum. He adapts and reacts by adjusting line weight, color interaction and the new line's directional effect on texture. His process is meditative and tedious, but his finished work is expressive and impressively crafted. Carpenter draws with a tool once used by draftsmen, ink filled technical pens on paper. A Mississippi native, Carpenter earned his B.S. in History at Mississippi State University and M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at Louisiana State University. Carpenter has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine and New American Paintings and has received two grants for outdoor sculpture and painting. His work has been featured nationally at the George Krevsky Gallery in San Francisco, the William Dale Gallery in New Orleans, The Medici Center for the Visual Arts in Philadelphia and The Metropolitan Gallery in Arlington, VA. Carpenter also served as a Professor of Painting and Drawing at Nicholls State University (Thibodaux, LA) from 1991 – 2012.
