At Smith & Steel, we take meaningful memories, combine them with timeless techniques, and make something that has never existed before. We began Smith & Steel in a garage with basic tools and vintage equipment. We now enjoy our unique shop in downtown Salem, Oregon. We love working with one another and with builders, businesses, and individuals who share a creative vision. Each day brings new opportunities to collaborate on unique projects and forge relationships around creativity and community. Materials consist of automotive, industrial, and agricultural salvage. Common steel is also used as a canvas. Most of the salvaged items have served humanity in transportation or manufacturing. These items were designed for specific purposes in the mechanical world, often remaining hidden and rarely seen. We have a passion to showcase their beauty as a focal point to once again "move" us. The materials were retired from service due to wear or obsolescence. Imagination, resourcefulness, and edge are conveyed through a variety of timeless techniques. The materials are "re-appreciated" from the beginning, starting with disassembly and cleaning. They are then re-imagined, emphasizing their shape, texture, and depth. Various salvage items and common steel are combined through welding processes, allowing them to be appreciated anew as functional art or sculpture. –Artists Ric, Justin, and Vonda Smith
