Richard Lee Carson lives and works between New York and Lake Tahoe, California. His work has been exhibited across New York, Connecticut, Colorado, Texas, and California. Throughout his artistic career, Carson has worn many creative hats—owning a glassblowing studio, operating an art gallery, and collaborating with interior designers and architects as both a fabricator and creative partner. His primary medium is wood, through which he creates custom furniture, sculptural feature walls, and hand-carved three-dimensional wall art. Carson’s artistic evolution is rooted in a deep connection to both craft and creation—beginning with dismantling old barns and transforming reclaimed wood into functional furniture. Over time, he was drawn toward greater freedom of expression, leading him to explore carving as a means to move beyond utility. His current process combines carving, burning, and the ancient technique of encaustic—applying layers of heated beeswax and pigment. Once used by Greek and Roman artists, this method has seen a resurgence for its rich texture and luminous depth. Each piece becomes a story in form, shaped by emotion, light, and the living character of the wood itself. At the heart of Carson’s work is a reverence for home, nature, and love. He draws deep inspiration from the intricate beauty of natural design, exploring the fluid complexity of wood and the endless possibilities of geometric patterns, contrast, and organic form.
