Based in the Yorkshire Lincolnshire Borders, Martin John Fowler is an artist deeply connected to the wild coastal areas of the UK, which he extensively travels and records – from the Scottish Isles down to the hidden coves of Cornwall. Hailing from the mining towns of South Yorkshire, Martin's artistic foundation was laid at Doncaster College of Art, where he studied drawing and painting, followed by a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Sheffield College of Art, specialising in Painting and Printmaking. His compelling work has been showcased nationally and internationally in solo and mixed exhibitions and competitions, with pieces residing in numerous private collections. Martin primarily works on location, meticulously capturing the essence and mood of a place through sketches and notes, which he then refines in his studio. His artistic goal is not a literal reproduction, but a critical balance of abstraction and reality. The outcomes are consistently characterised by a vigorous application of the medium, revealing his profound enjoyment in its manipulation. This creates powerful passages of energy and textured balance, often punctuated by areas of impactful quietude.
