I am a sculptor; my medium is metal, most of the time. I have built numerous pieces on commission in copper, aluminum and steel. My sculptures tend to relate to the natural world and take the form of animals; they are not cast but shaped from sheet metal, wire, chain and found objects. I am a self-taught artist. My current goal as an artist and human being is to relentlessly present/represent the superior beauty and intricate engineering of the ecology “we” attempt to contain and use. I am drawn to the discarded materials of industrialization; the very materials we use to confine livestock and restrain habitat. The materials we use to dominate nature, I seek to repurpose into totems for the preservation and education of an ecologically diverse planet, a planet based on holism and interconnectedness. Where historically the totem pole is built on the cylindrical shape of the tree trunk, I have decided to utilize humanity's cast off forms from our industry. Dimensional steel supports our structures, but it also abandons all other species. Steel post, beams and gas lines have provided us with a false sense of security even as they routinely fail us. The totems or structures I seek to create interweave our destructive human history with the unfathomable splendor of the wild world that is asking us for a pause button. Art is the result of the need to focus on one thing other than the global pain humanity continues to keep in the closet. Through art, I hope to inspire others to consider how much we have lost and how little we have gained. The natural world when witnessed takes your breath away, and when carelessly destroyed, ruins any chance we have as a species to continue our existence in a true and honorable manner. I am currently studying birds. Driving back roads you often pass a fence post with rusty, old barbed wire spooled around the top of it, a large bundle that often makes me think from the corner of my eye that it could be a large bird of prey perched there. It is from this beginning that I have created barbed wire owls, my totem eagle, birds in flight, tangled fantastical birds landing on a perch, and continue to build upon the great mystery of the bird and the myriad of poses they take throughout their day.
