Sally Gatie's artistic journey is deeply rooted in a fascination with precision and form, cultivated during her early career in a London architectural studio. There, she honed her skills on technical drawings, appreciating the hands-on, visual, and problem-solving aspects of the work. This foundation in meticulous planning would later inform her distinctive painting process. Initially studying Graphic Design at Leeds Polytechnic in the 1970s, Sally eventually returned to her first love, painting, graduating with a BA (Hons) Fine Art from York University in 2000. She works predominantly in oils, often on large-scale canvases. As part of her creative method, Sally frequently breaks down vast areas of canvas using a grid system, a technique that echoes her architectural past. This allows her to develop a "patchwork quilt" effect, where each square evolves into a tiny, self-contained abstract piece in its own right. After this meticulous planning and preparation, the painting process often takes on a more free-spirited approach, allowing the groundwork to submit to spontaneous expression. Sally's work often presents a profoundly feminine view of her world. Her 2013 touring exhibition, 'The White Room', beautifully captured the essence of tranquillity through vast images of sleeping figures, projecting a peaceful calm to the viewer. Inspired by the masterful drawings of Michelangelo and the intricate, patterned surfaces found in the works of Botticelli and Klimt, Sally delves into intimate and close subject matter.
