For Leonardo Rojas, painting is not simply an artistic practice — it is a ritual, a way of entering other dimensions of perception and translating them into visual form. He has been painting since childhood, and for more than 25 years has dedicated himself professionally to creating work that bridges ancestral cosmology, architecture, and the natural world. Rojas begins each work by making his own canvases — weaving and preparing the fabric, then building upon the surface before layering his compositions. This physical process becomes part of the meaning: each piece is born from both material and spirit, carrying traces of landscape, ritual, and lived experience. Deeply inspired by Costa Rica’s mysticism, biodiversity, and indigenous traditions, his paintings explore themes of shamanism, transformation, and cosmology. He often works outdoors, painting directly in landscapes or mountains, guided by intuition and ritual elements such as fire, smoke, stones, and plants. His process is intentionally fluid — a dialogue with materials, environment, and ancestral knowledge — always in search of new concepts and languages. His art does not chase a style, nor does it aim primarily at commercial recognition. Instead, Rojas creates from necessity: to share visions, to engage with the metaphysical, and to question the layers of perception and existence. His works move between figuration and abstraction, full of rhythm and movement, often revealing hidden beings, mythic references, or architectural structures. Beyond painting, Rojas is also an architect, designer, filmmaker, martial artist, and teacher. Through his studio projects Bekwo Productions and Shi Arquitectura y Diseño del Paisaje, he develops cross-disciplinary works that merge visual art, performance, and design. He has collaborated with musicians, dancers, and other creators, producing immersive projects where painting becomes the central conductor. At Sol Gallery, Leonardo Rojas continues to expand his vision — not only by exhibiting his large-scale, conceptually rich paintings, but also by imagining the gallery as a living space for dialogue, workshops, performance, and shared exploration. For him, art is both spiritual practice and universal resonance — a way of preparing for other planes of existence while grounding deeply in this one.
