Pop artist Don Kennell and team turn out iconic sculptures from their dusty indoor/outdoor studio in Santa Fe. Animals – coyotes, rabbits, and of course birds – come to life from layered, bolted and fused metals. The artists tap into recycled and cast off industrial materials to create these anatomically correct and oversized works, all of which command a double-take from the viewer. In a nod to converting what we source from our throw-away culture into a remarkable piece of art, Kennell and team give Mother Nature what he calls “an industrial sensibility”. Their beloved outdoor installations and public art delight passersby and also figure prominently in corporate and private collections Trained with an MFA from Rutgers University, NJ, his BFA from the University of Houston, TX, and his AA from Casper College in Wyoming, Kennell offers us “the transformation of unlikely materials adds a layer of content which turns the tables on the paradigm of a throw away culture and awakens a curiosity and awareness amongst viewers.”
