Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953, Prokop Igor Eugen is an artist whose profound connection to the natural world and deep philosophical reflections permeate every aspect of his work. Currently living and working in Visegrad, his artistic journey is as varied and expansive as the global landscapes that have inspired him. Prokop's early career as a dental technician, from 1971 to 1973, might seem a surprising beginning for an artist so focused on the breadth of life. However, as he himself states, "I had to cast metal and mould wax, plaster and porcelain. I was not captivated with this narrow range of people. I studied Biology and drawing and also taught them..." This early experience, though confining, perhaps laid a foundation for understanding material transformation and precision, which he later liberated into broader creative expression. His thirst for knowledge and understanding led him to pursue diverse fields of study: he trained as an Art and Biology teacher from 1974 to 1978, later deepening his understanding of Biology (1981-1984), Philosophy (1985-1986), Film Aesthetics (1987-1988), and Design Management (1990-1992). Most recently, in 2001-2002, he focused on Environmental Protection, a testament to his enduring commitment to the planet. These academic pursuits were not merely theoretical; they fuelled a life of intrepid exploration. Prokop’s art is a direct reflection of his wanderings across the globe. He speaks passionately of "the colourful, transparent world of the Cuban seas, the whirling movement of the barracudas, the endless and timeless space of the Mongolian deserts, the chaotic and artistic magic of Indonesia, enjoyed skiing among the peaks of the Elbrus... savoured exploring Vanatau, Tonga, Tahiti and Bora Bora and the friendly people there, their songs, sorrows, faith, their endless respect for their beloved islands and enjoyed their unrestricted appetite for beauty, erotica, exuberance and abundance." His experiences diving in vibrant oceans, witnessing "lemon, steel-blue and red fish... flashing and gleaming with intensive colours," and exploring the "impenetrable rain forests" with their "variations of green," have deeply informed his palette and subject matter. For Prokop, the material world is "the worldly manifestation of the spirit." His art is an endeavour to capture and convey the fleeting, yet profound, magic he perceives everywhere, from the vastness of the Earth seen from 11,000 metres, to the intricate "cavalcade of similar momentary magic" viewed through a microscope. A profound sense of responsibility for the future underpins his artistic mission. "As time passes by I have experienced during my trips that all this is perishing," he reflects. "I do not want my children, my students, the explorers of the future not to be able to see this magic. I am presenting some fragments from the endless world and giving them to the spectators with love.” Prokop Igor Eugen's dedication to his craft and his unique vision have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including multiple accolades at the Chianciano Biennale, such as the Biennale Leonardo Award for drawings and paintings, and the European Confederation of Art Critics Award. His achievements also include the International Confederation of Art Critics Award at the London Art Biennale 2015, the International Prize Andrea Mantegna in Mantova 2017, and the Oxford University Alumni Society Award at the Chianciano Biennale 2018. Through his vibrant canvases, Prokop invites viewers to share in his profound appreciation for the Earth's beauty, reminding us that our planet is "small, blue and fragile," and urging us to cherish its endless wonders.
