Holly MacKinnon is a visual artist working between Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and Montréal, Québec. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University and has done residencies in Iceland (Fish Factory Creative Centre), Portugal (PADA Studios) and Montréal (Les 7 doigts). She is most known for her oil paintings on canvas, though her practice encompasses many different media such as work on paper, watercolor and writing. Her practice revolves around connection; to others, to our histories and to our environment. In her most recent work, she uses old family photographs and stock photo imagery to create painting collages where layers of meaning are stacked and dissected. The paintings aim to strike a balance between the banal and the sublime, harmony and tension, darkness and joy.
