Will Alsop (OBE RA) 1947-2018 was an architect and an artist, but most often referred to as an anarchist. The core values of his practices were originality, innovation and expression. He courted controversy in equal parts to advocating pragmatism, all in the name of joy and delight. This hedonistic focus lead to buildings, installations, products and paintings whose hallmarks were a vibrant approach, brilliant colour and unusual forms. A seemingly disparate range of influences and day-to-day encounters with colleagues, students, clients, and many in the arts has led to designs by Will that are completely outside the expected norm of architecture or indeed of the architect. An artist who was determined to sometimes practice NOT ARCHITECTURE, Will designed brand identities, graphics, environmental systems, interiors and products. Photo: Malcolm Crowthers
