I am a painter and mixed-media artist living in Jamaica Plain. For the past several years, I have been painting seascapes inspired by the Outer Cape. I grew up near the coast and am drawn to the sea, forever moved by the power of the ocean, the fluidity of water, the rhythm of the waves, and the ever-changing light. As I spend more time on the Outer Cape walking the beaches and dunes, I have become sensitive to subtle changes in the environment and revel in the understanding that no two moments are the same — every season, every tide, every hour of the day and orientation of the beach is unique. Focusing on the incredible beauty of the natural world is a way to gain perspective. Nature is powerful and resilient, both a reminder of what is possible and what is at stake. In addition to oil paintings, I create collages from the photographs I print as references for the paintings and digital collages which I print and enhance with pencil and pastel. These imagined landscapes disrupt our expectations and cause us to reflect on what we often take for granted.
