Chris Kelly is a painter, graphic designer, curator, and surfer living and working on Cape Cod. “As a surfer, I find myself walking towards the Atlantic every time I go out to surf. I glance North and South, having a look in the distance where the dunes meet the horizon, and find myself captivated by the expanse and beauty of the Outer shores. For five years I’ve been working on the "Dune Patrol Series" and each year I find exciting new ways to tell the story through adding paint to canvas. These paintings are reflections of the magical beauty and the impact this place has on me. This new series captures the changing light and tides, and ever evolving shorelines. The mood and feel of the light seen throughout the year and the natural flow of the back shore inspires these compositions in my work.” Push/Pull features new abstract paintings by Chris Kelly. The works included in the show reveal a conversation that celebrates and employs graphic art, pattern, shape, typography, and color. The works on view are multi-layered and multi-colored compositions that have a positive and vibrant energy. The method in which these works are created is a combination of painting and silkscreen. The graphics used contain pattern, shape, word, letters, and digitally created vectors. These graphic elements are pulled and sampled from a variety of sources that comment on the history of commercial art, design, time, place, and theme. Kelly’s paintings are in private collections such as the Fidelity Corporate Art Collection and the Bank of America Art Collection. He is a member of the Corporate Art Loan Program at the deCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in Provincetown, MA. Kelly works as the Creative Director of The Provincetown Independent newspaper on the Outer Cape.
