Georgie grew up wandering barefoot and free in the red dirt and swimming in the rivers and water holes of outback NT. From a very young age her little Wiggles backpack was always full of pencils, paints, string, leaves, ‘friends’ (lizards) and treasures, some of which may have been ‘borrowed’ from Bower Bird nests. Around the age of ten, the Dunn family swapped the bush for the beach, moving to the tropical paradise of Magnetic Island. Exploring the pristine beaches and fringing reef awakened in Georgie a deep respect and curiosity of the ocean and what lies beneath the surface. “Nature is my happy place, especially under water. I am in constant awe of the beauty and power of the ocean”. During her schooling years Georgie attended afternoon lessons with local artist Vonnie van Bemmel, providing a creative outlet and setting her up with a fundamental understanding of the rules and techniques used in acrylic painting. “One of the important things I learnt from Vonnie is that not everything has to be perfect. There is beauty in the imperfection; perfectly imperfect’. Georgie’s creative and nomadic heart and soul then saw her complete a Bachelor of Design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne after graduating high school in Townsville. After 4 years in the brutal winters, she went back up North to the sunshine state and used Magnetic Island as a base for a few years while tour guiding up the East coast and overseas. Even during this busy time Georgie was drawing, painting and completing commissions wherever she could, from an Airbnb in Sarajevo (Bosnia) to the pebbled beaches of Croatia. After a stint back on Maggie during the Covid period, she and her partner then headed over Uluru to live and work. “Uluru is an incredibly beautiful and spiritual place, really like no other. I learnt a lot from the landscape and wildlife out there, about myself, my art and everything surrounding me”. Being a water person, Georgie deeply missed the Sea, and so two years later they made the move to Broome, finally able to see the ocean over the red sand dunes that she had dreamed about. In constant awe at the wild, raw and intense beauty of the Kimberley region ever since arriving in August 2022, Georgie now calls Broome a ‘second home’. Inspired by the extremely ancient and wise energy of the land, the intricate patterns and spectacular colours, Georgie’s work reflects her zest for life and love for this extraordinary country we call home. Her first solo exhibition at The Black Stump Gallery was an enormous milestone and a visual celebration of her time in the region. Her work’s vibrant colours and detailed patterns mirror her surroundings, depicting the energy and wisdom of the Earth and its elements. Making art is a meditative practice for Georgie, favouring soft and fluid mediums that fuse effortlessly with minimal interference. “My art is a love letter to the universe. I paint what I feel, hoping to offer a deep sense of peace, calm, and tranquillity”. From coast to coast, Georgie continues to travel and soak up the beauty and essence of ‘place’, translating it all onto paper, in the hopes of offering a unique and beautiful perspective of her world. She offers connection through her artworks.
