"I paint because I have to, it is my way to be and to share in the world. I do not know what will come next, I just wait and watch, surprised and happy. Many years ago, I was taught a design system using basic geometric shapes from Nature to form borders and eventually whole compositions. After a while I was told to use paint; I resisted, not interested, never having painted before, owning no supplies, nothing. As soon as I did as I was asked, I was home naturally, comfortable, easily, very surprised to be a painter. It continues 50 years later, self-taught painter, always interested, always evolving, and having fun waiting to see what is next." Fred Cohen studied architecture at the University of Miami before attending Pratt and the City College of New York. He has been featured in group and solo shows in New York City since the late 1970s and received the Prix de Paris Award in 1980.
