A true local artist, Chris Veeneman was born in 1963 and grew up in Breckenridge, where his family still resides. After graduating from the University of Colorado, Chris received an MBA from Thunderbird International School of Business and then attended the L'Ecole Boulle in Paris, where he studied design and interior architecture. Chris started painting in 2009, and has had two solo shows in Paris as well as group shows in the UK and in New York. He was also selected as one of 12 finalists for the Emirates Future Artists international competion in 2012. Today, Chris' home and studio is in Paris but he returns often to Breckenridge to see family and friends."My work tends to evolve rather quickly as I like to experiment with and explore different themes and techniques. My abstract paintings are inspired by nature, but they are a way to work with the physical aspects of oil paint and the interactions of the colors. Another aspect of my work is varying the surfaces on which I paint. For example, I use plexiglass as a medium, superimposing several layers and creating an interplay of light and shodows between them. Other media include metal and Corian. Brushed stainless steel, for example, provides an interesting way to use the reflection of light in landscape compositions as the painting changes aspect according to the angle of the viewer."
