Dierdre Patterson is a contemporary abstract painter who doesn't plan her paintings—she listens to them. Color arrives, form responds, rhythm takes over. What emerges feels inevitable, the way a good room feels inevitable: balanced without being rigid, warm without being soft, completely itself without trying to be anything. A Dierdre Patterson painting doesn't settle into a room. It organizes it. Patterson is an abstract artist based in Tacoma, Washington whose intuitive process allows form and color to develop through movement rather than pre-drawn composition. Working across painting and sculpture, each work unfolds gradually, shaped by rhythm, proportion, and balance. Color relationships, repetition, and gesture create compositions that feel open and steady—carrying a sense of warmth and ease. Rather than directing an outcome, she allows the work to arrive through attention and response. A 2025 Neddy Award finalist, Patterson’s work has been featured in national brand collaborations, public art initiatives, and publications including Essence and Abstract Magazine. Beyond the studio, she is the co-founder of CON_CEPT, a creative agency that supports and amplifies Black and Brown creators through strategy, exhibitions, and special projects.
