Amanda Langer uses steel and yarn to create pieces that explore contrast becoming complement, dissonance becoming harmony, and of differences as power. She uses a plasma cutter, MIG welder, and oxygen-acetylene torch in her metalworking. The metal is then subjected to cleaning and polishing with an angle grinder, and sealed either with beeswax or lacquer. In the fiber components of her work, Langer prioritizes using natural fiber yarns such as wool, cotton, and linen, although sometimes uses blends that incorporate small amounts of synthetic fiber. She knits and crochets all materials by hand, and fiber components are usually crafted separately and sewn on. Langer does sometimes crochet directly onto the metal structure, resulting in an organic and often web-like effect. Langer explores the nature of conflict in a simplified binary: between two entities that appear to have nothing to do with each other. She explores how the differences between the materials reflect the dissonance that humans experience, whether that be within their individual selves, between persons, or amidst groups – whether in terms of race, religion, or political ideology. Langer is curious about how people identify each material with extremes on a spectrum. In short, she is challenging humanity’s relentless obsession with infighting and domination and asks what brighter possibilities exist if we instead focus on how our strengths can complement each other, rather than reaching toward obliteration of our perceived obstacles. Her concern about conflict and harmony stems from her background in farming and ecology and the ongoing struggle between the needs and vitality of the natural environment and the effects of industrialization, “development”, and modern life upon it. She believes there is a world possible where “progress” does not conflict with the patterns and processes of the living earth, and hopes that her work might hint toward how that work can be found.
