Christiane Chavazza’s artistic journey has always begun at home, in the quiet sanctuary of her workshop overlooking her garden. For her, this space was more than four walls—it was a refuge, a nest from which creation could take flight. Her career took root in 1993, when she first began receiving invitations to exhibit her work. At that time, she worked primarily in patinated terracotta, clay infused with warmth and earthiness. Yet, like a river inevitably finding the sea, her art soon flowed toward bronze, a material that brought her recognition and distinction.A close friend once described her oeuvre in words that still echo today: “Most of her work consisted of female busts with soft shapes, elegant curves, bronze statues and patinated terracotta in warm tones—like this generous, joyful, and maternal artist herself.” These sculptures, imbued with both tenderness and vitality, quickly found an international audience. Her first major exhibition in New York was followed by others in Brussels and beyond, culminating in a series of shows through January 2007. Along the way, she was honored with prizes that encouraged her to continue pursuing her artistic path. That same year, the sudden loss of her only daughter profoundly altered her artistic path. After a period of silence, she returned to creation through painting and sculpture, her style becoming more abstract, sensitive, and deeply personal. Black emerged as a central element in her canvases, tempered by vivid chromatic layers and radical geometries, while her sculptures grew more slender and expressive.Today, Chavazza’s work embodies a dialogue between grief and grace, strength and vulnerability. Her sculptures and paintings, though distinct, share a purity of form and emotional authenticity that transcend material. For her, art remains, in her own words, “a window of breath”—a vital means of transforming lived experience into universal expression.
