A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for over three decades, Chongbin Zheng draws inspiration from the region’s distinctive atmospheric and environmental effects and rich ecologies, a reference in his practice that connects him to the California Light and Space movement. Throughout his career, the artist has held the classical Chinese ink tradition and Western pictorial abstraction in productive mutual tension. By this, he has been exploring and deconstructing their conventions and constituents — figure, texture, space, geometry, gesture, materiality — thereby developing a distinctive body of work that makes the vitality of matter directly perceptible. Through the interactions of ink, acrylic, water, and paper, Chongbin Zheng’s paintings generate and record the processes that underlie the emergence of order in organic life and human consciousness - and its inevitable dissipation. His paintings thus resemble natural structures ranging from neurons, blood vessels, and tree branches to mountains, rivers, and coastlines, thereby however instantiating their formation rather than depicting them objectively. Maintaining his work with painting, Chongbin Zheng has synergistically integrated his multi-media based exploration throughout his installation and video projects. In these works, Chongbin Zheng represents processes of nature — from molecular and cellular to topographical and climatic. Projected at the scale of human perception through microscopic and macroscopic imagery and accompanying soundscapes, he unfolds these processes spatially and temporally. His artistic research is thereby led by an interest in highlighting the inherent interconnectedness of diverse protagonists while showing how the environmental world is full of ‘intra-actions’ that happen on multiple levels, both visible and invisible. Adapting his works to new environments is an important part of Chongbin Zheng’s artistic practice as it allows the artist to explore how even minute changes in environmental lighting or spatial conditions can redescribe or transform the original work. Chongbin Zheng has had solo and group exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Los Angeles County Museum of Art LACMA (LA), Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (San Francisco), Brooklyn Museum of Art (NY), Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia), Museum of Fine Art Houston (Houston), Asia Society Museum Houston (Houston), Denver Art Museum (Denver), Cantor Arts Center (Stanford), M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Museum of Art (Hong Kong), Shanghai Biennale 2016 – 2017 (Shanghai), The Power Station of Art (Shanghai), Palazzo Mora, the Venice Biennale 2015 (Venice), University of Alberta Museum, (Alberta, Canada), Taipei 2010 Contemporary Ink Painting Biennial (Taiwan), Asia Pacific Art Museum (Pasadena), Pusan Museum of Modern Art (South Korea), Third Chengdu Biennale (Chengdu), Shanghai Art Museum (Shanghai), National Art Museum of China (Beijing).
