Intrigued by the potential the surface of his canvases holds, Borja Martín-Moreno has been pushing ‘au-delà de la peinture‘ — beyond painting — in his compositions that speak to the possibilities of matter becoming image. With an idiom rooted in gestural expression and monochromatic Minimalism, his artistic language harbours the affordances of his media as he plays with their tactile quality. Through the use of distinct materials and various tools, Borja Martín-Moreno creates works whose three-dimensional presence challenges the limits of the canvas, giving each piece a sculptural feel. The architecture of the image thus assumes form as his works transcend the two-dimensional plane towards a gradual appearance of their relief-like appearance. By incorporating texture and materiality to forge surfaces that dynamically interact with space, Borja Martín-Moreno harnesses the affordances of matter in composition that vibrate from within.
