Rūta Naujalytė is an interdisciplinary artist living between Lithuania and Norway, known for creating hyperrealistic textile objects. Her works are composed of small knitted details that transform into figurative characters – sometimes humorous, sometimes macabre – depending on the viewer’s perception. Subtle irony, sensitivity, and an emotional test for the audience are central to her artistic practice. She studied textile art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Kaunas Faculty (BA 2006, MA 2008), and since then has been active on the international art scene, presenting solo exhibitions in Berlin, Oslo, Vilnius, Mjøndalen, and Fão, Portugal. Naujalytė’s work has received significant recognition, including the X Stitch Magazine Contemporary Embroidery Award (1st prize, 2023), the BBA Artist Prize in Berlin (2022), the Arts and Crafts Design Award Grand Prize in Croatia (2016), as well as the Lithuanian State Artist’s Grant (2012). Her art has been featured in international publications such as From Threads to Needle and Contemporary Embroidered Art (Thames & Hudson, 2025) and Art and Woman: The Life and Creative World of 100 Women Artists (2024). She has also taken part in more than 40 group exhibitions worldwide – from Beijing and New York to Porto, Paris, and Oslo.
