Alex Macdonald specialises in domestic furniture. He has been designing and making furniture since 1993 and mainly uses wood moulding techniques. Pieces are produced by his studio and licensed to overseas companies.Though the design process Macdonald tries to understand and exploit the natural qualities of the materials he works with. His designs often have a light visual appearance and are made of non-exotic woods such as maple, beech, laminate or plywood. His furniture is made with ease of manufacture in mind. An uncomplicated construction process also ensures that it is easily transported and assembled. Born in 1965, Alex Macdonald studied furniture production at Dorset Parnham College. After three years in furniture production at Hackney's Howard and Constable, Alex started working independently in 1988, designing and producing prototypes for celebrated designers and architects. Since 1993 he has been working on his own original designs for furniture and prototypes. His pieces are sold in America and Europe and have been exhibited in New York and London.
