Catherine Hough is one of the foremost glassmakers working in the UK today.All her work is based on free blown glass forms which are then transformed through the use of a wide range of cold working techniques. Pebbles, geological strata, birds, fish and plants are a constant source of inspiration for glass artist Catherine Hough. All her work is based on free blown clear glass forms which are then transformed through the use of ‘cold’ techniques such as carving, cutting and texturing, grinding and polishing, sandblasting and brushing. Her interest in using these techniques arose from a desire to further develop the blown form, rather than purely for surface decoration as they had traditionally been used. In recent years Hough has been investigating the interior spaces within her work, using large hollow forms as a starting point. Through the varied positioning of forms with no fixed base, or the use of multiple forms, she explores the reaction of changing light and reflection, and the inter-relationship of form and space.
