Suzanna Schlemm is a painter whose work tells the stories of an imaginary tribe of women, deeply intertwined with nature and the animals that share the land—particularly birds. Working primarily in large-scale oil on canvas, she builds her compositions in layers, drawing from a tradition of observational painting that evolves into her distinctive form of disruptive realism. Her imagery often appears as if channeled from a familiar, inner sanctuary, offering viewers a quiet, protective, and deeply intimate space to engage with her work. Originally from Brazil, Schlemm began her career in advertising before shifting her focus entirely to painting in 2001. She studied at the New York Studio School, the School of Visual Arts, the Art Students League, and Parsons The New School of Design, curating her own education while thriving in New York City’s creative energy. She later expanded her practice internationally through the Alex Kanevsky workshop in Madrid, a transformative experience that fueled her innovative approach to art-making. Schlemm has exhibited widely in Connecticut and New York City, and her practice continues to explore themes of connection, ritual, and the natural world. Collectors are drawn to Schlemm’s work for its layered craftsmanship, imaginative storytelling, and the sense of sanctuary it imparts—paintings that reward careful observation and resonate with both beauty and emotional depth.
