Jane Radstrom captures intimate, candid moments in large pastels and in oil paintings. "As a realist, I am aware that I am a part of a centuries-old tradition of artists depicting the human form, but I also want my art to respond to the current time period. I am inspired by photographic effects, such as manipulation of exposure, to create images that look 'real', and yet are not exactly the same as reality. This is a quality I try to capture in ‘The Girls Series' through unusual color, visible mark-making and layering of poses." At only 28 years old, the observation skills that Radstrom displays are remarkable. Focusing on nuances of body language and expression, she fluidly conveys the presence of her subjects. Radstrom first studied drawing and painting at Watts Atelier San Diego, California. The methods practiced in atelier schools are based on meticulous renaissance traditions of masterful realism. She then attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, earning a BFA with honors in 2008. Her work has been recognized nationally, including awards from Pastel Journal Magazine, The Pastel Society of the West Coast, and publication in American Art Collector. Radstrom currently resides in San Francisco, CA where she teaches drawing and paints for galleries across the US.
